Pine Nuts & Noses

Ada has always been a little different from other children her age, in a good way, of course. For instance, she has never been one to put things in her mouth or place things in funny places. I have never needed to worry about Ada playing with little toys or things. But that all changed a few nights ago.

Randy was away for business so it was just the two of us. Ada was sitting in her highchair eating a snack while I was chopping vegetables for our dinner. She was snacking on some pine nuts, which she has had dozens of times before. I was watching her occasionally while I was cooking and during one of my checks, Ada had this panic look in her eyes and I saw a pine nut in her nose. As soon as I saw what was happening, I dropped everything and ran to her to pull out the pine nut. But as soon as I got to her, she decided to sniff. And sniff hard. That pine nut went shooting up her nose.

I yanked her from her highchair and was trying to explain to Ada to blow her nose. She obviously had no idea what I was getting her to do because she just kept sniffing. Pulling that pine nut even further into her nose. I tried laying her down on the bed and using a flashlight to see where the pine nut ended up. I couldn’t see it anywhere. So I tried calling Randy, my parents, and my friend to figure out what in the world I should do to get the pine nut out. In my panic state, I decided to take her in to the ER.

Now as a back story, it didn’t help that I just watched a video on FB about a little girl who stuffed something up her nose. The doctor was too scared to try to pull it out because he thought he would just push it up further. Causing them to operate to get the object out of her sinuses. So this video was fore front in my brain… I just knew that the pine nut was too high for anyone to pull out.

On my way to the ER, I heard Ada sneeze a few times but I didn’t stop to check the pine nut, I just kept driving. My friend advised me to call the pediatrician, which was good advice. So glad someone was thinking logically. By the time I got the pediatrician on the phone, I was sitting in the parking lot at the ER. The pediatrician told me to just let it go and to not worry about it. The pine nut will eventually slide through her sinuses, down her throat, and into her belly. I was shocked that is what she suggested. She wanted me to sleep knowing that my daughter had a pine nut her nose! It was going to be a long night.

So I went back home. When we got home and I started getting Ada out of her carseat, I noticed that a pine nut was sitting on her chest. She apparently sneezed it out before we even got to the ER. *Cue huge sigh of relief* I am so relieved that we avoided our first ER visit, at least for now! 😉

At this time, my parents returned my call and I explained to them what just happened. They thought it was hilarious and my dad told me that Ada is just like her great grandfather. My dad told me the story of my grandfather placing a dry pinto bean up his nose. And as you know, as dry beans get wet they expand. So the bean expanded and got stuck. They made a tool to help get out the bean and created a funny poem to go along with this story.

“Little Johnny Greene

Up his nose he stuck a bean

Who got it out?

Little Eddie Stout.”

Now if only I could figure out a poem for Ada’s little pine nut incident. Anyways, I am just glad that everything turned out just fine and that I can laugh about it now. Moral of the story… no more pine nuts.

One Year Recap

I still find it incredibly hard to believe that Ada is a one year old! It feels like just yesterday I brought home our small bundle of joy and at the same time I can’t remember what our lives were like before Ada. I love this sweet girl more than I ever thought was possible!

Looking back on all our photos from this past year, does make me tear up a bit. But at the same time makes me smile, watching our daughter grow, change and learn has been the most fun I have ever had! And I look forward to all the new adventures we will have in the future with Ada.

Randy’s 30th Birthday

This past Monday, my sweet husband turned 30! I had planned to have a big party at our house with all of our friends and family, but we decided against it. It is hard to throw a party with a baby! 😉 Instead, we plan on having a wonderful night out, just the two of us, closer to my 30th birthday. But we celebrated a little bit for Randy’s birthday this past weekend. Since the weather has been so beautiful, we decided to take Ada on her first hike!

Had to take a little break. 🙂

She did really well in her backpack carrier at first. Then she cried and cried and cried. So we transferred her to the Ergo and she was happy again.

Isn’t that waterfall gorgeous?! I love where we live!

I carried her for a while in the Ergo, then we moved her back into the backpack without the sunshade and she was perfectly content with that. So I guess it was the sunshade that freaked her out. Either way, babies sure do keep you guessing! 😉

Back when it was just Randy and I hiking, we would just need our camelbacks. Now we have to bring the daypack and the backpack carrier (which has tons of storage too). Maybe we overpacked, but you have to bring a lot for a baby! Diapers, wipes, bottles, formula, extra clothes, pacifiers, toys – you get the picture! Although, I will admit, seeing little Sophie in the pack was pretty darn cute. But Ada was even cuter – looking so cool in her North Face hat.

Overall, I think Ada enjoyed it. She was just taking everything in – the trees, the waterfalls, the people, the sky. Turned out we didn’t need the toys to entertain her! 😉

To finish our day, we stopped by Oskar Blues Brewery. We enjoyed a cold one, while little Ada took a nap. She was tuckered out! Poor thing! She had a full day. 🙂

Happy 30th Birthday my love! Ada and I are the luckiest girls in the world! Thank you for everything you do for us. We love you so very much!

Ada’s First Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day this year was simple and easy going – like most of our holidays around here anymore! We did enjoy some Valentine’s Day festiveness at home – brownies, flowers, and a romantic dinner for just the two of us!

A few days ago, I had a few of my girlfriend’s, and their babies, over for a simple Galentine’s Day breakfast. We try to meet at least once a week to talk about motherhood, marriage and life. We are reading a book together called, “Hoodwinked: Ten Myths That Moms Believe and Why We All Need to Knock It Off”. It has been such a great book for all of us moms to read together. These ladies have been a wonderful blessing to me and they have become my dearest friends. I am grateful that I have them in life, especially during this time, because let’s face it; being a mom is hard… wonderful, but hard! 😉

We enjoyed a simple breakfast of waffles, bacon, cupcakes and of course; mimosas!

Ada enjoyed watching all the other babies play. Hopefully watching them move around will inspire her to try to move around too! This kid has no interest in moving or sitting up by her self yet! I guess she will try it when she is good and ready!

I hope your Valentine’s Day was filled with love! Happy Monday ya’ll!

Four & Five Month Favorites

I feel like Ada has grown up so much this past month! She is now teething, eating some solids and is working on sitting up completely on her own now! It is almost like one day she woke up and decided she wanted to eat our food and sit up all by herself.  Where did my little newborn go?!237b3fd5-7aa8-4a2d-9f06-9a37bca9d8cf

Nuby Bibs – With all this teething, Ada is a drooling machine! She goes through bibs and clothes at a phenomenal rate! That is, until I found these bibs. They truly keep Ada’s clothes dry and Ada enjoys the teether on the bottom too! They are kinda hard to find, but you can find them at Walmart and Target (but not Amazon!).

Bamboo Swaddle Blankets – I know I have mentioned these blankets before, but Ada has shown a huge interest in her blankets here lately. She loves holding onto them, rubbing her face with them and chewing on them. I like the bamboo swaddle the best because they are really thin and super soft. I feel comfortable with her napping with them because they are so thin and breathable. Plus, I just love this turquoise color!

Boogie Wipes – These wipes are nice for my teething Ada. Not only is she drooling a lot, she also has had a stuffy and runny nose. I love the way the fresh scent smells and it is easy on her sensitive nose. I know these will come in handy this winter with all these colds going around!  Note: I tear these wipes in half to make the pack last longer! The wipes are so big anyways, half a wipe is more than enough for a little one’s nose!

Baby Oatmeal – I can’t believe Ada is already eating solids! Just… wow! She has just started on Oatmeal and seems to like it pretty good. I do mix in some fruit into the oatmeal, otherwise it is pretty tasteless! Haha! So far, Ada enjoys banana! I’ll be introducing sweet potatoes soon!

Tummy Time Pillow – As I have mentioned before, Ada really hates tummy time. She screams at the top of her lungs, turns beet red and has tears running down her cheeks. It seriously the worst thing ever! For Christmas, she received this pillow and she actually likes it! She lays on it and plays with the crunchy toys. Maybe because she is a little bit older, but we can now do tummy time thanks to this pillow!

Sophie the Giraffe – I know that this toy is everywhere and on everyone’s registry. I don’t know what it is that babies like about this toy, but Ada really loves her Sophie. She loves chewing on this toy and laughs every time I squeak it! Plus, it is adorable!

Pink Poodle – This is Ada’s absolutely most favorite toy! She just squeals in delight, laughs and kicks and wiggles about every time we get it out to play. I guess she finds the rattling and jittering hilarious! Whenever she is upset, this is the toy that I bring out to make her happy again!

Ada’s First Christmas

We had such a wonderful Christmas this year! There is nothing better than celebrating the holidays with a little one! Even though Ada is just a baby, it was still fun to watch her play with ribbons and watch her eyes light up when she saw a new toy.

Despite Ada’s age, I still wanted to start Christmas traditions with her this year – we made sugar cookies together, we watched the Home Alone movies and Elf, and stayed in our Christmas pjs on Christmas day, eating junk food all day! It was glorious!

We started off the morning with Christmas breakfast casserole and then dived right into presents.

Ada really loves the toys from Lamaze! I love watching her play with them! She was passed around all day to be loved on by all of the family. She got fussy a few times, but I’m pretty sure she throughly enjoyed all the attention!

I hope you all a wonderful Christmas filled with joy and love!

“Joy that will be for all people today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you, He is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10

Four Months

On Christmas Eve, Ada turned 4 months old! I have loved every second of these past four months with Ada. We just couldn’t be more in love with her! I have really, really enjoyed this stage – more than I thought I would, to be honest. She is still this sweet, snuggly baby but at the same time she is growing and developing her own little personality. It has been an absolute joy!

First Christmas-22

I love how Ada lights up every morning when she wakes up. She squeals in delight, waves her arms and kicks her little legs like crazy! She is just so excited to see us and is so happy in the morning. It has been and still is, my favorite time of day with her. But when Randy comes home from work, Ada laughs and laughs! She just loves her daddy! She is a daddy’s girl through and through.

First Christmas-23

Sleeping has been difficult here lately. She has always fought taking naps during the day, so this past month I have been really working with her. I read the 90 Minute Sleep Program and it helped me better understand babies’ natural sleep patterns and wakeful times. Basically, it is just learning your baby’s sleepy signals and taking them at that moment to bed (or at least starting in that direction). It was very hard at first, but it seems to be getting better. She will now not fight me as hard to take her naps during the day.

First Christmas-24

Ada has been teething this month. There have been good and bad days. It is so hard to see her be in pain and uncomfortable. She has had tiny fevers, pulling at her ear, and has been irritable. I have been giving her infant tylenol to help and just started the teething tablets. But I have to say the only good thing about teething is that she wants to snuggle all day. It can be annoying sometimes, but then I remember she will not be little forever, so I just soak it all in! She seems to be feeling better the last day or two, so hopefully she is finished teething for a little while! The hardest side effect from this teething is her waking up at 3am every night and not going back to sleep for two hours! I forgot how hard it is not to get sleep! 😉

First Christmas-26

She has lost most of her thick, dark hair. I’ll admit, I was a little sad to see it go, but it is slowly growing back. Some of it is growing back in blonde and some is coming back in brown. So she has dark brown, light brown and blonde hair along with some bald spots! 🙂 She still has her blue eyes. They seem to favor my eyes – gray blue. Everything else about her is her daddy! We joke about how she is like Harry Potter – she looks like her father but has her mother’s eyes!

First Christmas-16

She still hates tummy time and has no interest in turning over at all. But she does very well sitting up either in her bumbo seat or my lap. She loves looking at her hands, fingers and toes. She has also shown a great interest in our cats as well. She has tried to pet them several times. It won’t be long till she is running around the house chasing them. And Ada as always, loves to talk. Every waking moment, she is talking. It really is the sweetest thing listening to her try to talk.

First Christmas-15

First Christmas-13

These have certainly been the best times of my life! I am so blessed and thankful for Ada. Ada, you are truly loved!

Adding Some Christmas Cheer

I have been a little behind on getting Christmas decorations out this year, probably because time just flies by anymore. I feel like my days go by in a blink of an eye. I guess that this is normal when you are a first time parent.

My days have been looking like this here lately – get up to feed Ada, drink some coffee, play time, fight with her to get her down for a nap, drink some more coffee, clean what I can in the house, do one part of a load of laundry, deal with a cranky baby because her nap wasn’t long enough, try reading books and rocking to help her go back to sleep… oh, it’s 5:00 pm already?! What in the world are we going to have for dinner? Scramble around in the freezer and pantry, and find wine, ice-cream and cereal.

By the time Randy comes home, I’m exhausted with a very overtired baby. Luckily, Randy is extremely understanding and has made some fantastic dinners for us. If it wasn’t for him, I’d probably starve! 😉 As you can see, decorating has not been a high priority this year. But I did manage to get some decorating complete. It was important to me to have a little bit of festiveness around the house; it is after all, Ada’s first Christmas!

It helps to be dressed in cute Christmas pjs to feel like Christmas! And I love that we match! Yeah, I’m that mom! 😉

I absolutely adore these bottle brush trees from Target! I think they are perfect for Ada’s nursery! I bought them on Black Friday and did not receive them till about a week ago. My order, somehow got lost; but Target was super helpful and fixed the problem immediately – so kudos to Target.

I think the colors are perfect for a little girl’s room! I happened to have card stock in these colors, so I made the “Merry & Bright” banner. I just love how it all came together!

And here are some more pictures of Ada in holiday pjs! Isn’t she the sweetest? I sure do love this little baby!

Only a few more days till Christmas! I hope your holiday is merry & bright!

Ada’s Christmas List

I’m so excited for Ada’s first Christmas! Even though she will only be four months old, I still think it is going to be fun and of course, special. Given her age, it is a little difficult to get her presents. But I put together a little wish list of things I know that she needs or will love.

christmas list

One | Two | Three | Four | Five | Six

As I have said before, Ada has really started to interact with the world around her lately. She loves playing and looking at books. So I think it is going to be fun to give her some toys for Christmas.

I would like to get her a Christmas book or two. This book looks so sweet and it really concentrates on the reason for the season.

She can, of course, always use sleepers. They are the one thing she wears the most and these holiday print sleepers from Old Navy are great. They are really soft and warm, perfect for this winter. Not to mention, the holiday prints are adorable! I like that they are not too Christmas-y. She can wear them all winter long.

Ada is just about ready for a bigger sleep sack. She only has about two inches left in her current fleece sleep sack. These sleep sacks from Baby Deedee have great reviews and have a comforter type feel.

I think Chew Beads makes the cutest rattlers and Ada enjoys chewing on them. They fit her little hands very well and all the color combos they have are adorable. I really like the colors of this one! I have been on a turquoise kick here lately!

As I have said before, Ada seems to really enjoy the toys and books from Lamaze. This moose and lion will probably find there way under the tree this year. Aren’t they so cute? And I think Ada is going to be very excited to have these!

Can’t wait till Christmas! I have been looking forward to celebrating the holidays with a little one forever. They help make the holidays so special and fun! I am excited to start our own Christmas traditions. What are your traditions with little ones?
